Balcony versus suite: the real answer
Neither the marketing nor the specifications tell the truth. What a decade of cruise planning has taught us about staterooms.

The cabin question comes up in every cruise consultation. Balcony or suite? Inside or outside? The marketing answer is clear. The truth is more nuanced.
What the brochure does not tell you
A balcony on a big ship faces other cabins. The view is narrower than you think. An inside cabin with a window that shows the corridor is, in practice, indistinguishable from an inside cabin with no window. But a suite with a real balcony — teak railing, lounge chairs, privacy — is a different experience entirely.

How we advise it
For seven days or less, an inside cabin and money saved for specialty dining. For fourteen days or longer, an actual suite or a mid-deck balcony on a small ship where privacy exists. The calculus changes based on trip length and ship size. Neither is objectively better — only better for the specific voyage you are taking.
