Spring cruising: the season nobody books

March, April. The weather's fine, the prices haven't peaked, and you'll have decks to yourself.

March and April — spring cruising — is when astute travellers book. The weather is fine but unpredictable. The prices have not yet peaked. And the ships are not yet full of families.

Why spring is underrated

School is still in session. Families are still home-bound. Adults book but feel scattered. The restaurants are never full. The deck chairs are plentiful. The crew still has energy — they have not been running eight months of back-to-back sailings.

The crew still has energy.

Where to go in spring

The Mediterranean before the summer crush. The Caribbean in the calmer shoulder season. Northern Europe as the ice melts and the days lengthen. Alaska's opening weeks before the tourist ships arrive in mass.

Spring cruising is a secret that is easy to keep because it is counterintuitive. Book it.
