The Dolomites in late May

When the lifts have stopped and the wildflowers haven't quite started — the quietest two weeks of the alpine year.

There is a two-week window in the Dolomites when the ski lifts have stopped and the summer hikers have not yet arrived. The refugios are open but quiet. The meadows are half-green, half-snow. The light is colder in the morning and warmer in the afternoon than it will be all year.

Why late May

June is the postcard month. But late May has the valleys to yourself. The passes are clear enough to drive but empty enough to stop. The hotels have just reopened, the staff are rested, and the kitchens are cooking with the first spring produce — white asparagus, wild garlic, the earliest strawberries.

The meadows are half-green, half-snow. The light is colder in the morning and warmer in the afternoon than it will be all year.

What to expect

Some trails will still be closed above 2,200 metres. That is fine. The valley walks — Pragser Wildsee, the path from Ortisei to Seceda's base — are more than enough. The point is not altitude. The point is silence, and the particular quality of air that only exists in mountains before the season begins.

If this window interests you, we plan Dolomites itineraries from mid-April onward. The best rooms book early, because the owners know the secret too.
