Mexico is not the all-inclusive caricature. It is not the spring-break beach. It is one of the most layered, culturally rich, gastronomically brilliant countries in the Americas — and most travellers see approximately four percent of it.
Four corners
Oaxaca for food, mezcal, and textile markets. San Miguel de Allende for architecture and light. The Riviera Nayarit coast — not Cancún — for the Pacific, the surf towns, and the boutique hotels that opened in the last five years. The Yucatán interior for cenotes, ruins, and haciendas that feel nothing like the coast.

What we recommend
Combine two regions. Fly internal. Hire a local driver for the stretches between cities. Eat at markets, not hotel restaurants. And give the trip at least ten days — Mexico rewards people who stay.
